ON THIS DAY...
...in 1814 Norway became an independent nation when Norwegian delegates met in Eidsvold and elected Prince Christian Frederick to be the King. 'Syttende Mai' as the day is called by Norwegian Americans is celebrated in America with ethnic foods, crafts, parades, costumes and various other Norwegian traditions. In Norway the day is celebrated with children's parades. Even the smallest villages hold parades for the children! Today, 90% of Norwegians are Lutheran.
