Started with a couple pounds of hamburger from a parishioner who recently butchered a heifer. Browned it in olive oil with some chopped onion and a couple shakes of garlic powder. Very lean. No drippings at all. Then I cleaned up and cubed and boiled a pile of potatoes from last summer's garden. Knobbiest spuds I've ever seen. Mixed up a bit of gravy using Beef Soup Base and thickened it with flour and water. Took my big 12" square x 3" deep corning ware casserole and layered browned hamburger, potatoes and a can of cut green beans, then more hamburger and spuds. Poured the gravy over it. Topped it off with a handful of shredded cojack cheese and baked it for 20 minutes while the kids set the table. Served it with buttered toast. Kids liked it. My wife thought I'd used too much soup base, which made the sauce too salty. I'd normally agree with her, but for some reason, salty has been tasting really good to me lately.
