Old Lutheran Rumors

Some of the most interesting pieces of Luther's life come to us from a collection of stories that his students collected that they called Table Talk. In the collection, we find Luther talking about his views on theology, marriage, the pope and just about everything else in his life. Please take this chance to express your views about life, but please, try to keep the Luther-like vulgarity to a minimum.

When the Reformation 2008 kit is revealed (if there is one), there are usually commemorative tumblers available at reasonable prices.

I don't work for OL. I just have a lot of their stuff. :D

Maybe you should work for OL... Extra income... And Val... I have a class with just 1 and another with just 2 students... Great fun.

I haven't looked recently at their travel mugs, but I like them to be microwave safe. I put hot tea in mine and then head to work and want to reheat once I get there.

I bought mine at the seminary bookstore in St. Louie.

I've gotten quite a few things at NID and LEA gatherings from the CPH area.

I was like a kid in a candy store last time I was at the CPH retail shop. So much good stuff. I spent an hour at the electronic keyboard trying out music, and my friends had to drag me out of there... :)

That's one advantage to living in areas with more Lutheran saturation, you actually get Lutheran bookstores. Down here we have Family Christian Bookstores and various Baptist places. FCB supposedly represents all forms of Christianity, but when I went in looking for a copy of the BoC they had never heard of it and didn't even have it as a special order.
Why are you looking down here? This stuff never changes, go look at something new... like the outdoors.

The one time I went into a Family Christian Bookstore, I was wearing my Sin Boldly t-shirt. I managed to find some stickers and a copy of Luther's Table Talk, strangely enough. But I won't go back. I don't like the music they play over their PA, and the aisles and aisles of method Christianity (How To Be Closer to Jesus Who's, Like, My Boyfriend and Stuff, and Will Make Me Pro$perou$ If I Follow These 12 Divinely Inspired Steps) pretty much made me nauseous.

I also avoid FBC. I do shop at ChristianBookstore.com. That way I can shop in peace without someone wanting to help me and making me feel like I am not Christian enough.

Making you feel like you arn't Christian enough?? What cause you havn't read all the books that they think are cool?

Trust me I know there is a lot of books out there that are like "Christian fads", and the younger people are the more likely they are to run and freak out over some fad book.

Talk to any young guy who's read "Wild at Heart" and all he can do is talk about how he's a cowboy or a knight or some sort of somewhat fictionalized historical male heroic figure.

I have the urge to read it just to see how much I will laugh.

I've never found much use for these books really. I read the purpose driven life, I did a study over it. . . Its a bunch of inspirational stuff that makes you feel good. That book most certainly didn't come anyplace close to changing my life, the word is what changed my life, the only book that ever did.

So are we all agreed that for Lutheran fun, it's oldlutheran.com; and for all other things Lutheran, it's Concordia Publishing House or Augsburg/Fortress (and maybe Northwestern if you've got the time, but really---who does)?

So let it be written, so let it be done.

I think I will be making an OL order soon...

I always like to make the time occasionally to visit CPH & the seminary bookstore.

I don't think you can buy Lutheran focused stuff at any sort of non-denominational type Christian merchant or store. You pretty much have to get it all from Lutheran focused places.

Realistically the de facto theology of America is a baptist theology. Thats the theology that goes into most non-denominational churchs. Thats the theology that most people think out of when they talk about God and thats the theology that covers just about every sort of conservative Christian book.

In this area because of the large Catholic population however its a bit different. For example I can find all sorts of books for Catholics in my local Barnes and Noble. In fact just as many if not more then protestant oriented books.

If you change "Baptist" to "Calvinist" I'll go along with you, but only because Catholics keep themselves separate and don't like having their stuff sold in the same store as the nondenom stuff.

?? Hmm really, from my experience the de-facto theology is always baptist. Most non-denoms I've talked to find Lutheran theology really weird and their theology is completely a baptist theo. (Remember baptists are the largest denomination in the US by far)

With the Catholics, the same could be said for Lutherans in fact we are probably worse on that. Lutherans are definatly not an "out there" denomination. Look at like the baptists, the assemblies of God, pentacostles, etc and they love to make lots and lots of noise on the cultural and political world. They are the ones that run around asking random people if they know Jesus and trying to get them to pray "the salvation prayer".

The Catholics defend themselves though with the Catholic league and they arn't as loud or noisy as your average baptist preacher on TV who's on a get out the vote crusade for the Republican party. They do try to work under the radar often and seem to try to push Bishops to withhold communion for anyone who may have voted for a pro-choice candidate. However they have only had some limited success on that.

Come to think of it the last time I was in a Christian book store I don't think I noticed any kind of Calvinist material there either.
