Epiph 3A

Isaiah 9 9*But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
2*The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—
on them light has shined.
3You have multiplied the nation,
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as people exult when dividing plunder.
4For the yoke of their burden,
and the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.

Matt 4:12-2312 Now when Jesus* heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the lake, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
15‘Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali,
on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
16the people who sat in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death
light has dawned.’
17From that time Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’*
Jesus Calls the First Disciples18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake—for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.’ 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

Jesus Ministers to Crowds of People23 Jesus* went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news* of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Grace & Peace, etc

" I [g] wandered so aimless life filed with sin
I [c] wouldn’t let my dear saviour [g] in
Then jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the lord [d7] I saw the [g] light.
(Chorus)
I saw the light I saw the light
[c] no more darkness no more [g] night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the lord [d7] I saw the [g] light.

Just like a blind man I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight Praise the lord I saw the light.
(Chorus)
I was a fool to wander and astray
Straight is the gate and narrow the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the lord I saw the light.

A pretty happy song—

Seem odd to have combo of religious fervor
& life spiral out of control?
Incongruous? Hypocritical?

“They say people in hell suffer eternal pain because of the loss of God….In my soul I feel just that terrible pain of loss – of God not wanting me—or God not being God – of God not really existing…That darkness that surrounds me on all sides –I can’t lift my soul to god, no light or inspiration enters my soul…In my heart, there is no faith, no love, no trust, there is so much pain…I don’t pray any longer. … Work holds no joy, no attraction, no zeal…I have no faith, I don’t believe…..The place of God in my soul is blank. There is no god in me. I just long & long for God, and then it is that I feel he does not want me; He is not there….Sometimes I just hear my own heart cry out “My God!â€
