Bored/Irritated Thread

Some of the most interesting pieces of Luther's life come to us from a collection of stories that his students collected that they called Table Talk. In the collection, we find Luther talking about his views on theology, marriage, the pope and just about everything else in his life. Please take this chance to express your views about life, but please, try to keep the Luther-like vulgarity to a minimum.

Even more irritating: People who quote Bible verses to fix you instead of merely commiserating.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, [3] for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. [4] And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. James 1:2-4 (ESV)

In this (our inheritance in Christ) you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, [7] so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:6-7 (ESV)

You're only being tested to see how well you've learned to love your neighbor.

What you did there, GreyBeard, is not irritating. It's helpful. We all have issues that are greater and more vexing than someone who can't condense a story, and the Scriptures you quoted are gratefully welcomed.

Also irritating is to get the Have Patience song from The Music Machine stuck in your head.

Have Patience
Have Patience
Don't be in such a hurry.
When you get
Impatient
You only start to worry.
Remember
Remember
That God is patient too
And think of all the times
When others have to wait for you.

I sing that song to my kids ALL THE TIME! My mom used to sing it to me when I was a kid and it's one of those things that snuck up on me (when did I start turning into my mom?) and now I can't help it.

Regarding potential house purchace in other thread --
may I just say here, or perhaps scream quietly ---- I really HATE paperwork! I hate searching all my files for documentation of every financial transaction I have made, or have thought about making, for the last 6 months, copying checks, deposit statments, scanning, faxing, filling out forms, having paper pushers not communicate with each other about what they have & what they need. I actually appreciate the "due diligence" on the part of the lender -- but if they'd been doing this all along a few years ago, the housing market wouldn't have crashed due to people being encouraged to lie on their loan apps so they could borrow more money than they could pay back. Of course, who remembers the last time one could get a home loan for 3.75 %? weird. Now if only our home we still own out of state were worth at least what we paid for the stupid thing, we could sell it & be out from under. Anyone want to buy a home in CA? You, too could have a truck load of paperwork!

I'm a quiet person on a staff of chatterboxes. I don't usually mind, but when the talking is nonstop and there's no break for someone (me) to pop in with a question about WORK . . . then it's irritating. I just don't know how to break in without seeming rude.

Be rude. Or clear your throat pointedly. I don't put up with that nonsense. People are there to do a job and if they aren't doing it then they should be shamed into realizing their mistake.

Word Girl Ruling needed!

A local paper reported that "A man pleaded guilty. . . " In my mind they should have said "A man plead guilty. . . "

Which is correct?

According to Merriam-Webster (the dictionary Word Girl prefers), there are three possible choices. In order of preference:
1. pleaded
2. pled
3. plead

Personally, I would have chosen "plead," but as you can see, "pleaded" is M-W's choice.

Are we talking plead (long e?) because that doesn't sound right to me. When I read it my brain automatically inserted pled, because that's what sounded right to me.

In past tense, plead and pled have the same pronunciation, according to Merriam-Webster.

Our new kitten was trying to pounce her own tail last night during family devotions. It was very distracting. But cute.

WHEN CHRISTIANS DIE, THEY DO NOT BECOME ANGELS.

I have a significant amount of Facebook friends who seem to believe this, posting such ill-informed sentiments around the holidays and death anniversaries, etc. I know I should counsel them or something, but it's such a sensitive issue for some people . . . Dang pop culture and its distortion of the Bible.
